The Water’s Edge

This is the view across the inlet at Tofino (Clayoquot Sound).

It’s Opitsaht, spelled also as Opitsat and Opitsitah, a Tla-o-qui-aht community in the southwest area of Meares Island (I’d love to know the traditional name of Meares Island but I can’t find it at the moment; if you know leave me a comment).

These edge communities – and, by community I’m including all the flora and fauna – are some of the most diverse places on the planet. No wonder then, that this area has a history steeped in desire to protect the natural environment and has the Sound recognized as an UNESCO biosphere reserve. The diversity here is palpable at times and, recently, has brought me some good fortune.

I’m thankful for a variety of reasons but mainly thankful for the indigenous folks who have been great stewards of the space for thousands of years.

Thank you!
