All that white

Well, winter is officially here. I guess.

Traditionally, there have been a variety of ways to mark the start of the winter season here in Ontario. December 1st is the start of ‘meteorological’ winter – the months of December, January, and February marking the frigid quarter of the year. December 21st of this year is the date of the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere – the solstice marks the start of it for many. But the first solid snowfall is undoubtedly when many feel it. Once you take up a shovel and slip around when out traveling, it’s certainly registering that the cold weather is upon us.

I lived on this property for about six years. I have very fond memories of the time. The space was great and it (my moving there) came at a time when I really needed some space. I have wet fishing line in, and pulled brook trout from, that stream paralleling the fence on many occasions. I’ve taken photos of that lone tree in the paddock there almost as often. This place was seminal for me in a lot of ways. I live just down the road from it now and revisit from time to time. Nostalgia about it a little shot of ‘feel good’.

So, when the first big snowfall of the winter hit us a couple weeks back (that’s right, middle of November), I figured I’d go again to remind myself how things looked under a white blanket, and give myself a shot. Wonderful, eh? Never ceases to amaze me how this place can evoke feelings. Maybe it’s just subjective for me? Maybe my memories are clouding my objectivity but I think this place has a magic quality. And, it looks great under a wash of white.

Enjoy the winter (if you’re in the northern hemisphere) and the summer (if in the south).
