Pillars & Posts
The posts are pretty obvious. The ‘pillars’ are the two people in the distance. We, the pillars and I, have been walking around the neighbourhood on a fairly regular basis of late. They generally leave me to my photographic endeavours when we are out. I’ll stop in places to take a shot and they will walk on and, maybe, pause if it looks like I won’t be catching up any time soon.
That’s the scene that inspired a ‘push the button’ moment. We have had a very mild winter and the small bit of snow along the curb is some of the last of it that is still around. Train tracks lie just on the other side of the fences. The fences are there to keep folks from accessing the tracks as well as acting as a noise attenuation of sorts (although, probably not effective enough in that regard for the folks who reside just behind me as I’m shooting here). I liked the linear layering along the bottom of the image and how it contrasted with the more mixed nature of the web of bare tree branches. The different shades of the fencing was also intriguing.
While I was shooting, the pillars walked on and I caught up with them as they were going through the underpass. The underpass image, my favourite from this walkabout, was far more spontaneous. I managed to fire off a few shots before they exited the other end of the tunnel – eliminating the silhouettes – and turned around to see if I was catching up.
The repeating shapes of the pillar silhouettes and the posts against the geometry of the underpass are what caught my attention. The play of shapes had my eye. The pillars have my heart.
